This weekend I was visiting a friend of mine and we got to talking about finals (obviously, since this week it feels that they will all be the death of us), and I was complaining about my History of Western Civ test that I desperately did not want to take - which, by the way, was incredibly easy and I finished just minutes ago - and then we were talking about history and wars and then she asked me how World War One started. I didn't freaking know how World War One started and I literally JUST finished a term full of History class. And yeah, we covered World War One. For about three weeks straight. What is wrong with me? What is wrong with our society as a whole if we don't even know how something called "THE GREAT WAR" was started, and why our country was involved in it in the first place?
This brings me to the actual point of this post, which is, where the hell are we headed? As a nation, as a people, as a generation, I don't really know, how about as a whatever-you-wanna-fill-in-this-blank-with. No wonder we are in such a compromised place right now. Our economy, I don't really need to say more. The foreign territory we are occupying and the wars we have waged, what percentage of our population even understands the reasons behind why we are in the Middle East right now? How many understand where the term "Middle East" comes from? Our society is so quick to speak up about the things that they hate and the things that "need to change" when it comes to their government, but how many of them actually fully understand what it is they are "against" or who it is that they need to express their concerns to? Blaming presidents, yeah that's simple. It's George W.'s fault that we are in Iraq, and it's Obama's fault that we are all still poor as hell. But who takes the time to investigate the issues that upset them and frustrate them that they wish they could change? Who really understands the history and depth of complications required to form a valid and educated opinion on these things?
Where are we headed if the people who speak the loudest are also the people who have the least to say? Scary.
