& I promise I won't let you down
flipping pretty pages past your sick imaginiation
turning down an offer just to tell them all you did
searching for some answers in the factory on the water
tearing down the docks just to build another bridge
laying in the sunlight coming through the slats above us
roof's been gone for ages but we haven't felt a thing
rain comes heavy distant drowning
rivers flood and twist to cities
taking down whatever happens to stand in disaster's way
sometimes felt like this is my book
writing pages from my head to my hands
signed at the bottom with a dot, an x, an o
reading in the dim light coming from your bedroom window
stopping every other paragraph to glance outside and see
when you'll come back to me, if your promises will make good
stop to listen for the whir of your old engine heart machine
your feet carried you so far
why won't they run back to me
i'm lonely distant waiting, you're too busy to even sleep
tunnels through the city take me off to somewhere pretty
i want to see you soon but i can wait another year
i've always hated the way that your face contorts when you smile
but at the same time i can't keep it together when i see those teeth
tie me up in ribbons lace my fingers to the woodwork
keep me in confinement waiting until you return
adventures may await you with every step that you take further
from this little home we've built in the midst of this daunting city
i'm frightened when i think that you may never come around
again, and tell me it'll all be fine
just to leave me.
